KANGAR, June 28 (Bernama) — Mempelam sala from Perlis is now called Perlisunshine in line with efforts to commercialise the commodity in the international market.
Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu who gave the state’s mempelam sala the brand, said that presently, the commodity received high local demand and had penetrated the Singaporean and Indonesian markets.
According to the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama), 36,417 metric tonnes of mempelam sala were marketed to Singapore last season while its market in Indonesia was still small.
Since early this year, Fama has marketed 293,250 kilogrammes of Perlis’ mempelam sala to Johor, Penang, Kedah, Melaka, Terengganu, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Kuala Lumpur.
Dr Md Isa was met at the Perlis agriculture exposition in Dataran Datuk Sheikh Ahmad here today.
Mempelam sala grower Abdul Wahab Ahmad, 72, said he welcome the branding for the purpose of commercialisation “but for the time being, let us call it sala”.
